ENG 1220 FAIRY TALES IN LITERATURE AND FILM

"Once upon a time" is a special sort of invocation, enticing us into magical worlds of talking animals, wicked stepmothers, and princes and princesses brought low. But where do these stories come from? Why have they remained popular for so long? And what do such tales say about gender roles, romance, class, race and sexuality? This course considers canonical fairy tales, fiction by contemporary writers and film adaptations to examine how fairy tales work.
