Expressive Arts Minor

The Expressive Arts embraces the power of creative expression for the health and well-being of individuals and communities. The discipline involves the intermodal exploration of visual art, movement, dance, creative writing, music, theater and performance, to foster human wellness, growth, resilience, and social change. Versatile in scope, the Expressive Arts has multiple applications in the fields of counseling and therapy, social work, education, coaching, consulting, conflict resolution, organizational development, and community engagement.
The minor is interdisciplinary and includes courses from the arts and social sciences. Minors are also required to take introductory and capstone courses that will expose them to expressive arts methods and processes and the varied applications in this field of study. In the introductory course, students become conversant in expressive arts foundational concepts and theoretical frameworks. In the capstone course, students have the opportunity to channel their minor coursework into designing and leading a collaborative intermodal expressive arts project. The Expressive Arts minor at Elon also acknowledges that diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the heart of individual and community well-being. Thus, the curriculum reflects attention to cross-cultural contexts of creative expression, social justice, and the role of the arts in enacting social change.
The curriculum is intended to be flexible, to easily pair with several majors, minors, and programs of study on campus. In that flexibility, students can shape the minor requirements to their individual and professional interests.
