MUS 3836 MASHUPS: HIP HOP AND ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC
This course focuses on the creation of original music derived from the practice of sampling prerecorded music and sounds. Topics include the generation and origins of sampling in hip hop and electronic dance music, the analysis of stylistic and musical characteristics of sampling and instruction on the use of digital audio workstations to creatively apply sampling to original material.

This course involves lecture content in addition to software-based music creation and exploration. The activities provide an active learning environment to explore concepts introduced during lectures.
- Students will correctly assess fair use in sampling cases
- Students will identify borrowing examples in western music history
- Students will identify the different styles of mashups in popular music
- Students will successfully demonstration production processes involved in the creation of mashups in popular music
- Students will use music software to analyze keys, tempos, and rhythms of prerecorded material for use in mashups
- Students will use music software to implement pitch and time shift processes for mashups, when appropriate from a creative perspective
- Students will correctly analyze pre-existing mashups; identifying samples and creative techniques used
