GBL 2851 RENAISSANCE ITALY: VIDEO GAMES VERSUS REALITY

The Assassin’s Creed video game franchise is one of the most popular in history. Assassin’s Creed II (AC: II), which takes place during the Italian Renaissance, has sold over 9 million copies. Thus, it is a popular way that millions of people, gamers, teachers, and students choose to interact with Renaissance Italy: its history, its characters, its art, and its architecture. This course takes the bold stance that the game can provide much more than a fun, engaging, and immersive pastime. When used simultaneously as a tool of study, the game’s captivating narrative and realistic reconstructions of the past can be used to investigate history, as well as interact with a variety of primary and secondary sources related to the Renaissance and game studies. Finally, it can help us develop a critical eye towards the video game medium and how we view and interpret historical moments and monuments in the present day.
