OT 5224 Introduction to Driving Rehabilitation

Occupational therapists provide a unique skill-set for evaluating, rehabilitating, and habilitating driving skills. In this course, students will learn about the role of occupational therapy in addressing driving as an occupation across the lifespan from teens to seniors. Content will include identifying fitness-to-drive through observation of ADLs and I-ADLs, selection and administration of evidenced-based assessment tools, and application of theoretical models. Students will apply clinical reasoning to make decisions about fitness-to-drive and intervention plans. Hands-on experience will include assessment of person-vehicle fit, operation of adaptive driving equipment, and selection of adaptive driving equipment. Prerequisites: OT 4017/OTL 4017 or OT 517/OTL 5017 (may be taken concurrently); instructor consent required. Meets two Saturdays.
