Bachelor of Music in Music Education

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree program is designed specifically to certify music educators who will teach music in a public or private school system. Students graduate with an understanding of modern teaching pedagogy, conducting, score study, elementary and secondary classroom organization, and advanced learning theories. In addition, students are exposed to methods of inclusion, diversity in the profession, and myriad repertoire styles.

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree plan offers two tracks: Vocal Track and Instrumental Track.

Candidates must declare a performance focus of voice or a traditional band or orchestral instrument. Future choir directors should follow the Vocal Track while future band or orchestra directors should follow the Instrumental Track. Students who would like to teach Elementary Music can choose either the Vocal Track or Instrumental Track.

A minimum of 149 credit hours are needed to complete either track of the Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree plan.

Admissions

Admission to the Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree program is a two-fold process.

Requirements: 

  1. Admission to the University of the Incarnate Word.

  2. Admission, through audition, to the Department of Music.

 

Bachelor of Music in Music Education Degree Plan

Candidates must declare a performance focus of voice or a traditional band or orchestral instrument. Future choir directors should follow the Vocal Track while future band or orchestra directors should follow the Instrumental Track. Instrumental Track Degree Plan

The student combines the Bachelor of Music in Music Education with a minor in All Level Education. This degree may require up to ten semesters of study and results in all-level teacher certification at the undergraduate level.

8 credit hours of major ensembles. Ensembles are Cardinal Band, Cardinal Chorale, Orchestra or Wind Ensemble.

String Principals should be in Orchestra of the Incarnate Word (MUEN 1181) both Fall and Spring.

Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion Principals should be in Marching Cardinals, (MUEN 1140, Fall) and Wind Ensemble (MUEN 1185, Spring).
