SEI 6610 Emotional Literacy

This course will introduce students to the concept of emotional literacy, which is the fundamental recognition and understanding of emotions crucial to personal and interpersonal development. Through both theoretical and practical exercises, students will learn that emotions are not contradictory to reason but rather essential to both thinking and expression. Furthermore, they will learn that the recognition of emotions has the potential to amplify, rather than hinder the communication process. This is distinct from emotional expression, where emotions can take precedence to the point that rational thought becomes challenging. Additionally, students will learn to express emotions productively, striking a balance between authentic self-expression and social appropriateness. By the end of this course, students will have a well-rounded understanding of emotional literacy and possess tools to help them foster healthier relationships and make more informed decisions in both personal and professional contexts.
