UIW Libraries

UIW Libraries, a part of the UIW Academic Division, include the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Library which serves all programs on Broadway Campus.  All Cardinal students and faculty are welcomed in the Mabee Library, UIW's main campus library.  Other libraries include G.W. Brackenridge Library at the Feik School of Pharmacy, the G.W. Brackenridge Library at the Rosenberg School of Optometry, the G.R. Johnson Library at the School of Physical Therapy, and the SOM Library at the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine. UIW libraries provide access to over 320,000 books and media in physical and electronic formats as well as over 110,000 journals and serials in physical and electronic formats.  Liaison librarians and staff work directly with faculty and students in creating informational and research guides, assist in assessing and building collections, and supporting resource sharing activities such as interlibrary loan, TexShare borrowing, and on demand requests.

All electronic resources can be accessed on campus or remotely from your home, office, or any other Wi-Fi accessible location.  In addition to our resources, liaison librarians are available to assist with reference and research through our Ask-a-Librarian email, in person and through consultation appointments, and chat. Please visit the UIW Libraries webpage for more information about programs, services, and hours of operation.   A few highlighted services include Nights in the Nest which is hosted for students as they prepare for finals, Cardinal Seats which allows students to “book” a spot in Scholar’s Corner in advance, our group study rooms, circulating technologies and other study support materials, and the open computer lab,  Cardinal’s Nest.

The UIW libraries actively participate in the life of the university with a focus on developing partnerships and services in support of teaching, learning, and scholarship through the use of co-curricular instructional methodologies, innovative approaches in support of scholarship and research, the use of technologies that enhance discovery and knowledge dissemination.  With service from a knowledgeable staff, UIW Libraries help to advance lifelong learning of students, faculty, and staff.  The programs, services, and collections of the UIW Libraries reflect differing points of view, various cultures, and a global perspective.  UIW Libraries, in all their activities, encompass the Catholic social teaching and social justice issues espoused by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and the University of the Incarnate Word Mission.

Cardinal Apps

Cardinal Appsis a unified dashboard that allows quick access to all the software tools you will use at UIW (e.g., Office 365, E-Mail, Canvas, Bannerweb for registration, DegreeWorks, StarRez residential housing, UIW Print, and others). This highly secure and flexible platform makes it easy to find all UIW software no matter where you are at and what device you are using.

Canvas Learning Management System

Canvas is the digital hub for learning across UIW, providing organized access to all of your courses and related information. This tool allows faculty to extend in-person classes and activities online, provides a variety of engaging content, and keeps all students in the class actively learning necessary concepts. Canvas is accessible online through Cardinal Apps and through a high-quality mobile application.

vLab@Everywhere Computer Lab

The vLab@Everywhere is a 'virtual' computer lab system that allows students to access academic software from anywhere using a web browser on a student's personal laptop. Students can access the vLab by selecting "vLab" in the Cardinal Apps dashboard.

vLab@Everywhere provides students the latest software including:

• Microsoft Office Suite
• Adobe Creative Suite
• JMP
• SPSS
• Gerber Fashion Design
• ChemDraw
• …  and more!

The UIW Network

UIW is a fully networked and wireless campus. Wireless access is available anywhere on the UIW campuses, including dorm rooms, the Mabee Library, and shady spots under trees throughout the Broadway campus! Students simply connect to the "uiw-students" wireless network from any device using their UIW username and password. For help with problems connecting to Wi-Fi, just contact or stop by the Technology Help Desk.

The "uiw-resnet" network is available throughout UIW residence halls. This network allows students to easily connect their devices to the internet. There are no student charges for use of networks in the residence halls.

It is important to note that UIW offers a private network and cannot facilitate nor condone copyright violations. As such, UIW is obligated to block peer-to-peer file sharing activities on the network (e.g. KaZaa, BitTorrent, LimeWire and other applications that facilitate the sharing of digital music and video files in violation of U.S. copyright laws).

Student Laptop Purchase Program

Students are expected to have and use a laptop computer for their academic endeavors. Students are welcome to 'Bring-Your-Own-Device' to campus or may purchase a device through the UIW student laptop program. The UIW laptop program is provided through the UIW Bookstore and offers students the ability to select a variety of models. Visit the UIW BookStore web page to view models available or stop by the bookstore to view a demo unit. If applicable, students may be able to use financial aid to support this purchase. The help desk team will gladly assist you in resolving network/Internet and academic software access issues. For hardware problems, you will need to contact a Follett bookstore liaison or the manufacturer that warranted your system. The UIW Follett bookstore is happy to help coordinating warranty work you need.

Keeping in Touch

All UIW students are issued a university email address. Dubbed Cardinal Mail, it is powered by Microsoft Office 365. Access to email is easy through Cardinal Apps. A student email account is important because it is the electronic address to which all official university correspondence is sent. Students can use Webmail or the Outlook client and reap all the benefits of Microsoft Office365 (calendar, contacts, inbox, task/assignment lists and notes) while being able to send and receive mail from any internet connected device from anywhere in the world. Of note, all students receive free access to both the online and desktop versions of Microsoft office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) during their time at UIW.

If you do not receive information about your new UIW email account (sent by Admissions to your personal email account after admission) or you have lost your login information, contact the help desk for assistance in recovering your username and password.

Remember: protecting your password is important. Do not give out your password to anyone!

Mobile App

The UIW mobile app for iOS and Android devices provides on-the-go access to many of UIW resources. Download the App from the Apple Store or Google Play.

Audiovisual Support

Audiovisual support for special events and classrooms is available through the Media Services office. For more information, visit the 25Live app or contact the Help Desk at (210) 829-2721 to put in the AV request.

Do Not Forget

At the university, we govern ourselves and our actions on the Internet through the use of several acceptable use policies. We have summarized the "do's and don'ts" of these policies elsewhere. You can view the full text of these policies in the UIW Policy library at hTps://www.uiw.edu/policy/it/.
