The Master of Science in Applied Pharmaceutical Sciences degree program provides students the knowledge and skills required to be successful in Pharmaceutical Science careers. Opportunities are available for graduates to work in the pharmaceutical industry, government agencies, and research laboratories. In addition, the program provides a firm foundation for students interested in pursuing a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences. The program provides a graduate-level curriculum in the three key areas of Pharmaceutical Sciences: medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, and pharmacology. The curriculum also includes pharmaceutical regulatory affairs and research statistics to augment knowledge and skills for a successful career in the Pharmaceutical Sciences. In addition, students will have an opportunity to enhance knowledge on selected topics through elective courses. The curriculum includes research rotations and the selection of an advisor for the thesis research project. The program culminates in a pharmaceutical internship and master’s thesis defense. Students are expected to present their research at national and international meetings and publish in peer-reviewed journals.

Successful completion of the Master of Science in Applied Pharmaceutical Sciences program requires

  • a minimum of 21 months in residency,
  • a minimum of 32 credit hours,
  • successful completion of all core curriculum with letter grades of “B” or higher, and
  • successful completion of a written thesis, all or portions of which are suitable for publication as at least one paper in a peer-reviewed journal.

Admissions

In addition to satisfying the general requirements and procedures for admission to graduate programs at the University of the Incarnate Word, requirements for admission to the MS in Applied Pharmaceutical Sciences include:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree (such as Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Engineering)
  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional schools
  • Two letters of recommendation from professional colleagues, instructors, or professors
  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.75
  • Statement of interest
  • Invited interview
  • Official Score Report of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (optional)
  • Conditional admission will be considered for applicants not meeting minimum requirements
  • Additional requirements for international students.

Degree Requirements

The Master of Science in Applied Pharmaceutical Sciences program requires successful completion of a minimum of 32 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 3.0, and includes a written thesis and thesis defense.

It is expected that each candidate will be enrolled full-time in year 1 of the program and part- or full-time in subsequent semesters. A minimum of 21 months and a maximum of 7 years will be allowed to complete the MS degree.
