HIS 150G History of Disabilities in East Asia

Many disabilities scholars and activists argue that categories and experiences of disability are socially constructed in important ways. Course examines changes over time in how disabilities have been perceived and lived in premodern and modern East Asia. Drawing on textual, visual, and oral sources, differences are explored between China, Japan, and Korea but also regional connections. Course also analyzes how disability has been intertwined with material and social factors constructing gender, class, and race or ethnicity.
