ART 19000 Art and the Environment

This course addresses the historical and global significance of the natural world to humankind for survival as well as culturally, spiritually and aesthetically. Students will investigate our relationship with the environment through a selection of works of art from China, India, Tibet, and of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, as well as from the West. Topics will range worldwide from prehistoric cave paintings, ritual monuments and pyramids to earthworks of the environmental movement of today. The course will also examine global issues of environmental justice and sustainability including those in the non-Western world.
