CNSL 6840 Special Topics in Counseling

This course examines specific topics outside of the core curriculum. Primary focus of electives will be on specific modalities of counseling such as but not limited to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Suicidology.

Student Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate multicultural counseling competencies
  • Demonstrate a general framework for understanding differing abilities and strategies for differentiated interventions
  • Apply ethical and culturally relevant strategies for establishing and maintaining in-person and technology-assisted relationships
  • Demonstrate counselor characteristics and behaviors that influence the counseling process
  • Apply essential interviewing, counseling, and case conceptualization skills
  • Construct developmentally relevant counseling treatment or intervention plans
  • Identify development of measurable outcomes for clients
  • Apply strategies to promote client understanding of and access to a variety of community based resources
  • Understand processes for aiding students in developing a personal model of counseling 
  • Understand the principles, models, and documentation formats of biopsychosocial case conceptualization and treatment planning
