FYS 62 Emerging from Chaos
Societies are shaped by experiences of chaos and revolution. It was Thomas Jefferson who once said "the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Yet, modern conceptions of chaos and revolution are seen as weakening societies. This course will explore the many examples of how chaos brings about reform, revolution, and re-imagined forms of societal structures. We will explore examples of post-war, post-pandemic, and post-disaster scenarios as understood by historians, scientists and sociologists. Final projects will conclude with a modern application of theories and examples from class and discussion that explore ways that chaos can be transformed to help build a better world.
