Clinical Experience

Northwestern students begin clinical training in their first trimester with Clinical Observation. Clinical internship begins in the fifth trimester and takes place in one of the University’s on-campus clinics. Subsequent supervised internships may include assignment in other clinics (e.g. public service organizations, hospitals, specialty clinics and/or medical facilities) which have established relationships with Northwestern.

Clinic interns perform all aspects of patient care relevant to their degree program. Interns are closely supervised and evaluated by clinical faculty members and are progressively given more responsibility as their competence increases. The low intern-to-supervisor ratio ensures a high degree of personal attention in both acupuncture and/or Chinese medicine. By the end of their internship, students are ready to enter private practice.

Electives

In addition to the core curriculum outlined on the following pages, students are required to complete a minimum of three credits of electives coursework for the Master of Acupuncture and Doctor of Chinese Medicine Degrees. Courses from other programs may be eligible if the course pre-requisites are met, and at the discretion of the College of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.
