SOC114 Community Issues and Civic Engagment
This course explores the process of socialization and the relationship between current community issues and the role social service providers and first responders play. Students will apply sociological and civic engagement theories to the study of community issues including the opioid epidemic, homelessness and domestic violence. Students are introduced to the role local, state and federal governments’ play in developing and implementing public policies. The course emphasizes the importance of collective action in solving community issues and encourages students to participate in civic engagement activities.
