Biochemistry (major only)
Introduction & Overview
Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary program that deals with understanding the chemical processes of living matter. A knowledge of biochemistry is essential to fully comprehend most of the biological disciplines. This major is beneficial for students who are interested in chemistry, biology, as well as pre-health professions. Students in the major can also prepare for graduate studies in the biological sciences, including biochemistry as well as fields such as genetics, microbiology, physiology, immunology, and other biological and chemical fields. Students in this major can gain experience working on innovative research projects with faculty members in the program. Biochemistry graduates may go on to graduate studies to earn an M.S., Ph.D., or M.D., work for research laboratories in academic, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology companies; go into science writing or consulting; work in molecular forensics; or follow many other career choices.
With several updated teaching laboratories on campus and a robust research program with state-of-the-art scientific instrumentation, students gain valuable practical experience in addition to classroom time. There are also a variety of different internship opportunities, community service and Honor Society events, and science clubs that may be explored.
