Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)

Students who are New York State Residents may be eligible for the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). Students may receive TAP for up to four (4) years of undergraduate study, or up to five (5) years for certain approved programs. Because TAP is a grant, it does not have to be repaid.

What determines the amount of TAP that is received?

   The amount of tuition charged

The student’s combined family New York State net taxable income (NTI)

  • The year in which the student first receives a TAP award.

       Other siblings enrolled in college

  • The student’s dependency status (dependent or independent of parents). A student is considered independent by New York State if they:
    • have not resided and will not reside with parents for more than six (6) weeks
    • have not and will not receive financial assistance or support valued in excess of $750 from parents
    • have not and will not be claimed as a dependent by either parent for purposes of either federal or state income tax

The New York State TAP application may be completed through studentaid.gov immediately following completion of the FAFSA. Otherwise, it can also be accessed through New York State Higher Education Services Corporation.
