ASN 2039 GLOBAL SOUTH ASIA

South Asia has historically been a crossroads of civilizations, connecting Europe and Africa with the East. Communities across the region encompass tremendous ethnic and linguistic diversity; they are interconnected, making borders and regimes fluid, both still and continuous in their different elements. This course will explore the political and intellectual history, politics, and economy of the region through the relationships that communities have with each other and the world. Topics include the legacy of colonization, evolving democracy and authoritarianism, conflict and post-conflict institution building, nationalism, environmental challenges and movements, women's movements, migration and refugees, South Asia in the diaspora, and political economy, with focus on rural poverty and development.
