HLT 5105 Curriculum and Pedagogy Implementation In Health Education
This course will examine the use of curriculum and pedagogy to improve K-12 health education. Specifically, curriculum development, instructional planning and multiple research validated strategies for teaching students within the full range of abilities with skills in designing and offering differentiated instruction that enhances the learning of all students in the content areas of health education. It will provide best practices and curricular models as a framework for helping shape curriculum and influence teaching. Individuals will examine topic areas such as school health, personal health, curriculum making, pedagogy, partnerships and approaching health education in its entirety. Through a combined approach of a literature review, discussion and book readings, these themes will be explored throughout the semester. Each individual will demonstrate an understanding of conducting health education curriculum and pedagogy. Lastly, health disparities and inequities are outlined and methods delivered for women, sexual minorities, racial-ethnic minorities and individuals with learning disorders in the health education K-12 spectrum are further explored. In addition, students will be required to do ten field hours in an approved educational setting.
