MUA 2072 Cabaret Performance Wkshp II

Focus of this performance class is the successful solo communication of song to an intimate audience. Each student will perform a short cabaret set, five to seven minutes in length, consisting of two solo songs and a connective spoken monologue ("patter"). One of these two songs must be by the semester's featured songwriter. Students will also perform two ensemble songs. Communication and interpretive skills will be developed, with as much one-on-one coaching as is possible. Songs will be analyzed for text, music, and interpretation, with an eye toward understanding historical and societal context. Class structure is similar to an acting class, with all students observing when not performing. Students are also required to keep a journal of class and individual work, and write a brief research paper on the featured songwriter. The course culminates in one performance evening. Performances are open to the general public, as well as the Manhattanville community.
