ENF 3173 Queer Film & Media Studies

This seminar explores "queer theory" as applied to one of its key texts, the mass media and particularly film, video and new media. We historicize lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and other queer media from Weimar culture to Hollywood's Production Code era, from underground cinema to later cracks into mainstream, avant-garde, new media and video games. Coverage of AIDS receives attention, as do lesbian-feminist issues, the now-mainstream representations in TV, broadcast news and social media, plus New Queer Cinema, controversial artists in photography, and other international and especially U.S. expressions of queer politics, activism and culture. Sometimes controversial video material will be viewed and discussed frankly. Research paper required. (Every other year)
