ARH 2100 Classical Archaeology
This class introduces students to the Archaeology of the Classical World. Students will learn about the history and culture of the ancient Greeks, Romans, and their neighbors through a survey of art and architecture, ca. 1700 BC - AD 315. We will examine issues such as the reasons for cultural and artistic diversity and change, interaction and exchange between cultures, techniques in ancient Mediterranean art and architecture, and the re-evaluation of mythology. Students will also be introduced to the history of classical archaeology, basic methods of archaeological research in the Classical World, and current approaches and avenues of research. A component of the course concerns the laws and ethics of antiquities possession, sale and looting.
