This course provides an in-depth analysis of the major U.S. thinkers of the 19th century. Topics covered include the death of Calvinism and rise of Unitarianism; the Transcendental Movement; debates about slavery and race; states rights, the Constitution and Civil War; the role of women in America; the problem of industrial democracy.
