Center for Career Development-CCD

The Center for Career Development (CCD) supports and empowers students and alumni to make important decisions that integrate academic studies and life experiences with career planning. Students are provided with individualized counseling, on-line resources and experiential opportunities to explore all aspects of their career development. In addition to administering the College’s Internship and Student Employment Programs, the Center for Career Development provides a wide range of services that include self-assessment, career exploration, resume and cover letter writing, interviewing skills training, and job search strategies. Career fairs, workshops, in class presentations, networking and employer events are offered throughout the year to assist students and alumni as they explore career options and prepare for the job search process.

Key services provided include:

• Individualized conversations with a professional career counselor to assist with selecting a major and researching careers, industries and jobs.
• Assistance with writing resumes and cover letters, interviewing skills, internship/job search, professional correspondence and other career-related strategies.
• Career exploration through online resources, networking events, and job shadowing.
• Resources to assist in all aspects of career development.
• Professional development events for networking, interview preparation, and job search strategies.
• Internship and full-time job opportunities at job fairs and through online postings.
• Student employment opportunities including Federal Work Study and campus employment.
• Post-graduation planning for graduate school or employment.

Internships
The Manhattanville Internship Program offers students an important link between the academic and professional worlds. The College’s location in southern Westchester County, near New York City and Fairfield County, Connecticut, offers easy access to many nearby corporate, governmental and not-for-profit organizations, where students gain valuable experience in internships that complement their course work. The Center for Career Development assists students as they identify and apply for internship opportunities.

In order to be eligible to register an internship for credit, students must have the following requirements:
• Completed 30 credits of coursework
• Declared their major
• Must be a matriculated student

After completing 30 credits, students can integrate their academic studies with supervised work experiences by doing an internship on a part-time basis during the academic year or on a full or part-time basis during the summer for academic credit. Students usually register for internships under their major departments and must secure a faculty advisor from that department. Working with their faculty advisor, students identify learning objectives and formulate an academic project related to the internship. The Center for Career Development also supports students in a variety of ways during their internship course and acts as a liaison between the student and employer. A maximum of nine internship credits may be applied to the degree.

Internships for International Students

For Manhattanville’s international students, the Internship Program enhances the experience of studying abroad. In addition to the benefits of enriching course work with practical experience, internships provide international students with an introduction to U.S. businesses and professions. To be eligible for an internship, students must declare a major and complete 30 credits. The Office of International Student Services works closely with the Center for Career Development to ensure that all legal requirements are satisfied in arranging internships for international students. On-Campus Student Employment
Many students have an academic year work component as part of their financial aid package, referred to as Federal Work-Study or Campus Employment. We offer two types of programs for students to work during their tenure at Manhattanville College: Federal Work-Study and campus Employment. Students are not placed into a job; rather, they must apply for a job based on their interests, skills and schedule.

Federal Work-Study Program

The Federal Work-Study Program was established by the Higher Education Act of 1965. It was meant to encourage and promote the employment of students by helping them meet their educational costs. Eligibility for Federal Work -Study (FWS) is determined from the information students provide on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To apply for FWS for the Fall and Spring semesters, you must complete the current year’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at http://www.fafsa.gov and submit it electronically. The Manhattanville school code is 002760.

Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a financial award which allows an undergraduate student with demonstrated financial need to earn a portion of his/her educational expenses by working in a position on or off campus.

Off-Campus Federal Work-Study (OFWS): Students who are awarded FWS may be employed at approved off-campus sites with not-for-profit organizations or public agencies, and the work performed must be in the public interest. Positions may include elementary school tutors, recreation leaders and library assistants.

Campus Employment Program
Students who do not have Federal Work-Study may apply for a campus job under the Campus Employment Program. Limited non-Federal Work-Study positions are available during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. To be eligible, a student must be a current Manhattanville student.

Once hired, students in both programs are paid hourly according to the pay scales of the Manhattanville College Student Employment Job Classification System. Work schedules for campus positions are arranged by the student and the supervisor, normally ranging from 6-12 hours per week.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All hired student employees may not begin working until all required paperwork is received by the Center for Career Development. All potential student employees are advised to have acceptable documents readily available to establish identity and employment eligibility. Some common documents are the U.S. Passport, Social Security Card or U.S. Birth Certificate
