Required and Recommended Courses

Required Courses

Students who are not deemed college-ready either through state-wide assessment or locally administered placement exams must complete a developmental course of study in all deficient areas. Students must consult with their advisor regarding specific placement policies. Placement assessment is required of all students.

All new students who are enrolled in one or more developmental courses will be required to take a Student Success Course within their first semester of coursework. The Student Success Course teaches students the necessary skills to be successful in college. This is a one hour developmental course that meets for sixteen contact hours.

Recommended Kinesiology (KINE) Courses

Generally, four-year state institutions require freshman and sophomore students to complete health and Kinesiology (KINE) activity courses. For this reason, it is highly recommended that all students intending to transfer to a four-year institution ascertain that institution's Kinesiology and Physical Education requirements. Kinesiology (KINE) 1164, 1238, and 1304 are transferable as a part of LCC's Component Area Option Core Curriculum.

Transfer to Colleges and Universities

Students planning to transfer should consider completing the LCC Core Curriculum or an Associate of Arts/Science Degree. Both programs will prepare students for transfer to a university.

Students should be mindful that each college or university determines its own list of courses required for a particular kind of degree which may vary from requirements set by other institutions. It is strongly recommended that students obtain a catalog from the college or university to which he/she expects to transfer. The catalog will list the courses required for the degree sought.

Academic and faculty advisors at Laredo Community College are equipped to assist students in choosing courses that are both transferable and applicable to the program being sought. Students are also encouraged to use the on-line resources available on the Student Success Center transfer webpage http://www.laredo.edu/cms/transfer/.

As with any degree, students should avoid taking courses that are not required by their program of study. Doing so will lead to the accumulation of credits that may be applicable toward degrees and may compromise future financial aid.

Reverse Transfer

Students attending a four-year institution may transfer credits back to Laredo Community College so that they are able to complete an associate’s degree, particularly the Associate of Arts and Associate of Science Degrees. The completion of an associate degree is important for it provides a marketable credential for jobs while pursuing a bachelor’s degree, evidence of completing fundamental concepts and knowledge of an area, and an achievement of an educational goal.

Course Plan or Objective

Students must complete a program degree guide in consultation with their advisor prior to initial registration and must update the guide each semester. Each student who enters Laredo Community College should decide on a course of study or degree plan and work toward that objective.

Career assessment is available to students who have not selected a college major at the Student Success Center.

Academic requirements are not the same for all course plans, so it is important for students to get academic/career advisement and plan accordingly. Upon declaration of a major, students should contact the department of their major to receive academic advising.
