JS 310 Testimonies of Atrocity
This research seminar explores testimonies of two arguably most horrific human-made catastrophes of the twentieth century: Holocaust and the Soviet GULAG system. By studying victims’ accounts, students will learn to reconstruct daily experiences of people trapped in violence of totalitarian regimes. Applying concepts from theoretical literature, students will analyze diverse contexts of witnessing and discuss contingencies and challenges of creating testimony in different media (written, oral, audio) and social-political contexts of particular times.
