The following program meets State standards for teacher certification in English K-12. Students choosing this option must apply to both the English Department and the Department of Middle and Secondary Education. For all transfers and new admissions to the University starting September 1, 2012, a G.P.A. of 3.00 is required for admission to the Program.

Senior Level
(Note: EMSE*4811 and EDUC*4000 must be taken concurrently)
EMSE*4711 and EMSE*4811: Requires submission of application to the Teaching Performance Center. Clinical I and II must be done back to back and in consecutive semesters.
EMSE*4811 Clinical II Prerequisite: Passing score on the Praxis II: A passing score on the appropriate Praxis II must be submitted to the Teaching Performance Center by the required deadline. No student may enter Clinical II unless the passing score is submitted as required.
edTPA- This Performance Assessment is required and is completed during Clinical II. Beginning September 2019, all student must earn the state's qualifying scores.
As an NJDOE requirement. Clinical II must be done in the final semester prior to graduation and taken in conjunction with EDUC*4000, the Capstone Education class. Any additional course work left to that final Clinical II semester is discouraged and may only be done with written permission of the Dean of Education. All students are highly encouraged to complete all course requirements beyond EMSE 4811 (Clinical II) and EDUC 4000 prior to this final Clinical II semester as even a few remaining credits will delay NJDOE's issue date of the Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing.
Free Electives 2-3
No English courses may be used as free electives except for ENG 1996 Optional Research and ENG 3291, ENG 3292 or ENG 3293 Optional Internship courses.
ENG 1996 Optional Research: Freshman may partner with faculty to earn on credit as a free elective, which may be taken up to two times.
ENG 3291, ENG 3292 or ENG 3293 Optional Internships (1-3 credits) for a maximum of six credits, which may fulfill free elective requirements. Prerequisite are ENG 3001 or ENG 3029; 75 credits.
