ECO 110 Eco/Contemporary Social Issues
(Contact Hours: 3) Economics is the study of how people -- individuals and institutions -- make choices in a world of scarcity. As many contemporary social issues are rooted in the problem of scarcity, the science of economics is quite useful in understanding these issues and in prescribing solutions. Is it possible to have cheap consumer goods and a clean environment? What will it take to make the Social Security program secure in the 21st Century? When is the level of health care services unhealthy for society? Who wins and loses when domestic markets are protected from foreign competition? In addressing questions like these, this course will examine some of the most challenging social issues of our time through the eyes of the economist.
