CHM 250 Chemical Instrumentation

(Contact Hours: 6) This course is designed to present the common laboratory methods in instrumental analysis. Topics will include spectroscopy and chromatography. For each topic, the essential chemical theories will be presented, as well as the basics of instrument design, maintenance, and operation. Specific topics may include Ultra Violet and Infra Red, and Nuclear Magnetic spectroscopies. Gas and High Performance Liquid chromatographies will also be covered, as well as X-ray and atomic absorption. Some emphasis will be given to instrument setup, basic maintenance and troubleshooting, as well as sample preparation and analysis of instrument outputs. Recommended prerequisite: CHM 220 or equivalent. Minimum benchmarks will be enforced.
