Academic Standing
Academic Standing
Academic standing is determined by the earned GPA for cumulative work. A student whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 is placed on academic probation, continued academic probation, or academic suspension based on the following guidelines.
Academic Warning: Students who earn below a 2.0 semester GPA with a cumulative GPA above 2.0 will receive an academic warning letter. This designation is not added to a student’s transcript and students who receive an academic warning letter remain in good academic standing with the University.
Academic Probation: Students whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 are placed on academic probation. A notation indicating academic probation is displayed on a student’s transcript.
Continued Academic Probation: Students who are on academic probation meaning that their cumulative GPA remains less than 2.0, but who earn a semester GPA greater than 2.0 will be placed on continued academic probation. A notation indicating continued academic probation is displayed on a student’s transcript.
Academic Probation and Continued Academic Probation: In order to remain eligible to enroll in classes at Elon, students who are on academic probation or continued academic probation must earn a semester GPA greater than 2.0 in each semester until their cumulative GPA reaches/exceeds 2.0. Failure to meet this requirement will result in an academic suspension.
Academic Suspension: Students who earn a cumulative GPA below 2.0 for two consecutive semesters and who fail to satisfy the academic standards of the academic probation or continued academic probation will be suspended. Suspended students will be academically ineligible for the following semester. Suspended students may apply for readmission following a semester away and will return on continued academic probation. Suspended students may also appeal their first suspension, and, if successful, they will be placed on a continued academic probation. A second academic suspension will be considered final resulting in expulsion from the university. A notation indicating academic suspension is displayed on a student’s transcript for the term suspended.
Cleared Academic Probation: Students who surpass a cumulative GPA of 2.0 will clear academic probation. A notation indicating cleared academic probation is displayed on a student’s transcript. When a student clears academic probation but has a cumulative GPA that falls below a 2.0 again, academic probation is displayed on the student’s transcript.
Dismissal
The university reserves the right to suspend or dismiss any student(s) when it believes that such action is in the best interest of the institution and/or the student(s). This action will take place only after careful consideration with the student(s) in question and all other parties with information pertinent to the matter at hand.
Academic standing decisions are made after fall and spring semesters. Academic standing is not assessed after winter term or after summer terms.
