Classical Studies A.B.
Classical Studies offers an interdisciplinary lens into the languages, history, cultures, and enduring relevance of the ancient Mediterranean world and beyond. Students both explore “classical” ideas and practices as well as investigate the ways in which diverse traditions inform our present socio-historic moment. A major in Classical Studies serves as a valuable complement to many fields and prepares students for life beyond Elon by enhancing skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, intercultural competency, and communication. Students must choose between a focus in Ancient Civilizations or a focus in Ancient Languages.
Ancient Civilizations - Focus
The following courses are required

Distribution Requirement
Students must take 32 s.h. from at least 2 of the 3 areas (Ancient Languages, Culture & Society, Classical Connections).
20 s.h. must be at the 3000- or 4000-level.

Outcomes
Upon completion of the major in classical studies,
1. Students will learn how to apply critical thinking skills in their reading, writing, and in-class engagement
2. Students will learn how to interpret (analyze, reflect on, discuss, write about) primary sources of various types either in English or in a target language (e.g. Latin, Ancient Greek)
3. Students will learn how to effectively communicate their thoughts, ideas, research, etc. to an array of audiences in both oral and written forms
4. Students will be able to identify and articulate the diversity (linguistic, political, cultural, religious, ethnic, etc.) of the ancient Mediterranean world
5. Students will learn how to take leadership of shared projects and how to collaborate with peers
6. Students will gain an enhanced appreciation of and sensitivity to cultural difference, and identify forms of intercultural discourse that provide context to a modern global society
7. Students will be able to identify, analyze, critique, and articulate how the ancient Mediterranean world has been appropriated in modern constructs of “Western Civilization”
8. Students will learn how to develop and complete an original research project, using evidence and methodologies from a range of disciplines
