PA 5410 Medical Spanish for the PA
This course will provide an introduction and an overview of Spanish. It will provide cultural understanding and situated medical terms. This course is a great fit for those who are just starting to learn Spanish or are heritage speakers among the PA students. It is designed to help individuals communicate more effectively with Spanish speaking patients, specifically those from migrant communities in Central America and Mexico, which make up the majority in California. Throughout the course, you will learn how to greet patients, engage in brief conversations, gather preliminary patient information, and check patients into the hospital. You will also learn how to communicate effectively at pediatrician and gynecologist appointments, as well as other general health subjects. In addition to language proficiency, this course will also help you gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Central American and Mexican culture and the differences in health perceptions among Spanish-speaking patients. You will become familiar with culturally situated Spanish and medical terms, as well as basic grammar proficiency. Finally, this course emphasizes the importance of empathy and caring listening when working with English learners. By becoming a more effective communicator, you can help improve the health outcomes of Spanish-speaking patients in your care. We will use immersive Spanish through music and theater. This approach is a fun and engaging way to learn a new language while experiencing different cultural expressions. By incorporating music and theater into your language learning, you will have the opportunity to practice your language skills in a more natural and authentic way. This approach will help you improve your listening and speaking skills, as well as your cultural knowledge and appreciation - 1 lecture hour. Elective course for MSPAS 4th semester students. Prerequisite: Enrollment in MSPAS program.
