HONO 2006 The Scholar:Coastal Miwok Culture Change

This course will investigate the collapse of Coast Miwok culture in Marin/Sonoma/Contra Costa areas, centering on the Sacred Mountain of Tamaulipas, as well as their remarkable “ability to survive,” their cultural recovery by acquiring first recognition as a sovereign nation, and now relearning their ancient Creation stories and myths, language and songs, “Roundhouse” rituals and “Trade Feast” ceremonies. The Honors class will be enrichened by sharing and interacting with indigenous scholar, visitations and fieldtrips to Coast Miwok cultural centers starting with Marin Museum of American Indian and their administrative office at Cotati to meet with their leaders.
