EDUC 4010 Teaching for Equity

Introduces the foundations of education and the functions of schools in society. Explores the historical and cultural traditions of cultural and ethnic groups in California, and ways to include cultural traditions in instructional programs. Examines principles of educational equity and diversity and their implementation in curriculum content and school practices. Considers the academic needs of students from many ethnic, race, socio-economic, cultural, academic, and linguistic or family backgrounds; gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation; students with disabilities, and advanced learners; and students with a combination of special instructional needs. Investigates educational equity; identifies sources of personal bias and institutional bias, and attitudes, beliefs, and expectations about diverse students, families, schools, and communities.
