AAS 220 Introduction to African and African American Studies
This course explores the histories and lived experiences of Africans and communities of African heritage. It especially reflects on the shared and varied experiences of Africans and African descendants across the Black Atlantic. It wishes to show how historically black communities have actively and creatively shaped the making of the modern world. Themes of examination include: Transatlantic Slavery; Plantation & Colonial Economies; Gender and Sexuality; Religion and Spirituality; Négritude and Pan-Africanism; Civil Rights; Literatures & Aesthetics; Institutional racism; and Urbanity.
