Music Education Sample Plan of Study

Following is one possible way to complete the major.

Students should fill in gaps with coursework required for the core curriculum and other majors/minors to take an average of 14 credit hours each fall and spring, and 3-4 credit hours each Interim.  Total credit hours needs to be 124 for degree completion.

Music Education Sample Plan of Study [This will open a Google Sheet, which you can view as well as make and save a copy of.]

Majors and Minors must normally complete their Applied Music requirement in the same performance area.

  • A recital performance of at least 30 minutes duration is required during the junior or senior year for music majors. No recital is required for Music minors.
  • Students are required to demonstrate keyboard proficiency in order to be admitted into 300-level lessons.  Keyboard proficiency is demonstrated through passing the keyboard proficiency exam.  In the event that a student does not have prior keyboard experience, they should register for MUSI 152-155 and/or private keyboard lessons in order to gain the necessary skills to pass the proficiency exam.
  • Music Education - Vocal Emphasis majors whose major applied area is piano or organ must take a minimum of four terms in voice of either 30 or 50 minute lessons. If the major applied area is voice, seven terms of 50 minute lessons are required.
  • Music Education - Instrumental Emphasis majors must normally take the seven applied terms of 50 minute lessons on one instrument or in one instrumental area (woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion). If the major applied area is piano or organ, four terms must be on one other approved instrument. Exceptions are permitted only upon petition to the Dean of the School of Music.
