WGST 30413 Sex, the Body, & U.S. Borders

Since the late 19th century, sexuality, morality, and race have been the dominant frames through which the U.S. government has attempted to contain and categorize migrant bodies. This class examines how border regimes produce and discipline sexuality and the body through medical examinations, quarantine, policing, and law. Starting with late 19th century policies of exclusion and restriction, we will examine how the policing of sexualities at the border persisted through more liberal periods of migration, ending with discussions of migrant policy today.
