SPC 2716 Race, Gender, and Ethnicity in Popular Culture
Given that diversity often leads to conflict, it is the goal of this course, first, to examine portrayals of race, gender, and ethnicity in popular culture in an effort to understand how such portrayals reflect and/or shape our experience of diversity, and second, to critique these portrayals as they foster a cultural climate inimical to peace and social justice. These goals will be achieved through the study of the popular media including television, advertising, popular music, comic art, and film that comprise the predominant cultural environment common to most Americans.
