Honors in the Major
Senior chemistry students with an overall grade point average of 3.25 and at least 2 semesters or 1 semester + summer session of research are permitted to present a written thesis on their research for Honors consideration at graduation. The process is as follows:
By the beginning of their senior year, students should discuss doing Honors with their research mentor, get their approval, and send an email to the Chemistry Chairperson.
By September 30th, each candidate will select an honors thesis committee of two Chemistry program faculty members and one faculty member outside of the Chemistry program, in addition to their faculty mentor. This committee will be available for guidance and to help throughout the honors process.
During the first week of classes in the Spring semester, faculty mentors will check in with the Chairperson to confirm that honors candidates have enough content to proceed.
Before March, candidates will work with their mentor, and committee members to establish a timeline for the completion of the written thesis and honors presentation. Here are the requirements for receiving honors:
The candidate must complete a written thesis of their work. A mentor-approved draft of the thesis has to be sent at least one week before the presentation to the entire review committee. Improvement suggestions from the committee will be given to the students before the final version is printed and bound.
Honors candidates will give a presentation on their research. These presentations will last approximately 20 minutes, with an additional 5-10 min for questions. Honors presentations are typically scheduled for the middle of April.
Honors are recorded as Pass/Fail and are reported to the registrar by the Chairperson. The faculty mentor will inform the students of their performance after it is decided upon by the committee. The deadline for submitting honors results is announced by the registrar in the yearly academic calendar (usually end of April).
