FYS 13 Traditional Environmental Knowledge, Technology, and Sustainability
What is Traditional Environmental Knowledge and how is it transmitted? How is it similar or different from Western science? What can it teach us about resource management and environmental regeneration and sustainability? In this course we will examine key theories, concepts, and case studies from the fields of Traditional Environmental Knowledge and Decolonial Studies, focusing on such technologies as controlled burning; fish, shellfish and seaweed cultivation and enhancement; water management; medicinal plants; and agricultural methods utilized by Indigenous communities in the Americas. In addition, we will explore how TEK informs Indigenous sovereignty, environmental justice, and cultural movements, as well as debates surrounding its relevance for contemporary, sustainable resource management. Open only to first year frosh.
