College of Chiropractic Intern’s Clinic Handbook 2021-2022

7.1 Primary Internship Attendance Requirements

All clinical internship courses require students to participate as an intern in a clinical environment and to demonstrate cognitive, psychomotor and interactive skills. These skills are necessary to meet the course objectives and function in the practice of chiropractic.

Attendance and Participation

7.1.1 T7 Interns

  • Clinic hours are counted toward the quantitative requirement for the internship. These hours are recorded by interns in eMedley: Time Log and validated by the intern’s faculty clinician.
  • When completing the internship contract, the faculty clinician and intern define a schedule for the intern that is consistent with the Primary Internship Attendance Requirements.
  • Interns are required to be present at their clinic assignment for contracted hours – 6 minimum to 8 maximum - each week of the term.
  • There is a minimum requirement of 78 hours. The intern may not stop attending clinic until the term is over.
  • Interns must seek prior approval from Clinical Education to receive credit for hours beyond the maximum 8 hours per week.
  • Interns may alter their scheduled hours within a specific week for special circumstances with the approval of their faculty clinician, and per the faculty clinician’s availability.
  • Accumulating additional hours one week does not allow an intern to be at their clinic less hours the following week, or any other week.
  • Time Away from Clinic (TAC) hours may be used during the term as arranged between the intern and their faculty clinician. If an intern choses to use TAC hours at any point during the term, they are still responsible for ensuring they will meet the 78 required clinic hours by the end of the term.
  • Interns are expected to remain at their clinic even though they may not have patients scheduled. Interns may leave their internship site when their contracted shift has ended or when using any Time Away from Clinic (TAC) hours, if approved by their faculty clinician (see TAC policy).

T7 interns are required to remain in their primary clinic through the last day of the academic term (Thursday, 2nd week of finals). Interns may choose to stay in clinic over the academic break if arranged in advance with their faculty clinician. Interns must seek prior approval from Clinical Education to receive credit for hours beyond the maximum 8 hours per week. Also, meeting requirements before this time does not allow an intern to end their Internship and leave clinic early.

7.1.2 T8 Interns

  • Clinic hours are counted toward the quantitative requirement for the internship. These hours are recorded by interns in the eMedley: Time Log and validated by the intern’s faculty clinician.
  • When completing the internship contract, the faculty clinician and intern define a schedule for the intern that is consistent with the Primary Internship Attendance Requirements.
  • Interns are required to be present at their clinic assignment for contracted hours – 18 minimum to 21 maximum - each week of the term.
  • There is a minimum requirement of 300 hours for the term using a combination of primary internship hours and clinical rotations. The intern may not stop attending clinic until the term is over.
  • Interns must seek prior approval from Clinical Education to receive credit for hours beyond the maximum 21 hours per week.
If an intern choses to use TAC hours at any point during the term, they are still responsible for ensuring they will meet the 300 required clinic hours by the end of the term.
  • Interns are expected to remain at their clinic even though they may not have patients scheduled. Interns may leave their internship site when their contracted shift has ended or when using any remaining Time Away from Clinic (TAC) hours, if approved by their faculty clinician (see TAC policy).
  • Interns are not eligible for benefits or compensation during their educational clinical internship experience. See 1.8 Definition of Unpaid Internship.

Interns must seek prior approval from Clinical Education to receive credit for hours beyond the maximum 21 hours per week.
