Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation (DAD)

2017-2018

Type: Career, Degree (AS)

Open Admissions

Division: Health And Human Services

North Shore Community College provides a comprehensive, experiential education in the field of addiction and human services.  Our program is a Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Abuse Services (BSAS) Approved Education Provider for individuals pursuing licensure, and many students elect to continue their education at 4-year institutions following completion of the program.
Students enrolled in the associate degree program take coursework leading to employment in comprehensive addiction treatment settings, mental health programs, hospitals, prevention programs, health care, and other social service facilities.

Students gain knowledge of the process that leads to substance use disorders, the associated costs to society, and how to view addiction through a bio-psychosocial lens. Most importantly, study emphasizes reflection, the therapeutic relationship, evidence-based practice, the role of community-based organizations, and how best to obtain employment in the field of counseling at large.

Our two-year program includes field experience that students find invaluable in developing their counseling skills, preparing for the workforce, and becoming future leaders in Human Services.

Prior to the second-year field placement/internship courses, students are required to undergo criminal background checks, including Massachusetts Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) and Sex Offender Record Information (SORI) checks conducted at the college. Depending on the results, students may be prohibited from participation in field placement, thus impacting their ability to enroll in these courses and complete program requirements. Additionally, the host internship site may elect to do background checks, and prohibit placement.
NOTE: Most students entering the program with past legal charges are cleared for internships, provided there are no open charges at the time the checks are conducted.  Student with specific concerns may confidentially discuss these with the Program Coordinator, Dean, or Human Resources representative.
