NS4070 Research and Thesis Development

This mini-course guides students through the initial stages of the thesis development process, including the identification and refinement of a feasible research question and the selection of a faculty adviser appropriate to the proposed area of inquiry. The course meets irregularly throughout the term as scheduled on the course site and is completed as an overload registration. Successful completion requires approval of a thesis research question by an IRIS faculty adviser.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and evaluate potential thesis topics within the scope of the program.
  • Formulate a focused, feasible, and researchable thesis question.
  • Conduct preliminary exploration of relevant scholarly and professional literature.
  • Assess the methodological and practical viability of a proposed research project.
  • Identify and secure an appropriate faculty adviser for thesis supervision.
  • Produce a preliminary thesis concept approved by an IRIS faculty adviser.
