PSY.3070 Contributions of Black Scholars to Psychology

This course seeks to highlight the contributions of Black scholars in psychology for several reasons. The first goal of this course is to spotlight the contributions of Black psychologists that are often overlooked or ignored in undergraduate psychology courses. Another goal is to use the work of Black psychologists to exemplify how the field of psychology can be used as a tool in the aid of increasing diversity and inclusion for a variety of identities and lived experiences. This course will also address some of the systemic challenges that exist, both historically and currently, that cause fields like psychology to perpetuate systemic racism, and what can be done to change these processes. Topics covered in this course will include: researching marginalized communities, race, racism, and racial identity, decolonizing psychologies, Black children, youth, and families, intersectionality of Black identities with trauma, health, gender, and sexuality, and industrial/organizational inequities in education and employment.
