MSBM.5023 Managing Innovation in a Changing Business Environment
This graduate level course examines the problems and solutions in managing rapidly changing technologies and evolving business models in sport and entertainment enterprises. It will scrutinize how technology has changed the way entertainment and sport "products" are now being created, managed, distributed and monetized. In addition, students will survey business theories of innovation and explore how enterprises manage innovation that generates from within their own companies, as well as reacting to external innovations. Students will also examine how technological breakthroughs (or discontinuities) can form new industries or transform the nature of existing industries seemingly overnight. Lastly, it will explore how and why some sectors of media and sport embraced new technologies and others did not, often leaving them at a disadvantage or seriously endangering their viability.
