Biochemistry
Introduction & Overview
Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary program that deals with understanding the chemical processes of living matter. A knowledge of biochemistry is essential to fully understand most of the biological disciplines. This major is beneficial for students who are interested in chemistry, biology, and pre-health professions. Students in the major can also prepare for graduate studies in biological sciences, including biochemistry as well as fields such as genetics, microbiology, physiology, immunology, and other biological and chemical fields. Students in this major will get experience working on innovative research projects with faculty members in the department as a capstone requirement of the degree. Biochemistry graduates may go on to graduate studies to earn a Ph.D or M.D., work for research laboratories in academic, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology companies; go into science writing or consulting; work in molecular forensics; or follow many other career choices.
