HIST 239 Food and the City: Social Histories of the Premodern and Early Modern Middle East
In this course, we will analyze the ways in which religious and ethnic identities related to food seem to blur in urban traditions linked to food production, consumption and tradition. We will consider contextualized social histories of several cities of the premodern and early modern Middle East (Baghdad, Cairo, Constantinople/Istanbul, Aleppo and Jerusalem) through the lens of food history in an attempt to better understand the ways in which people living in those cities experienced the worlds in which they lived.
