ENG 332 18th-Century Oceans
This course explores transatlantic writings of the long eighteenth century that share an interest in the ocean itself as a setting, territory, concept, and cultural commons. Representative themes include slavery and circumatlantic trade, the rise of fiction and of modern science, revivals of religion and reason, emerging articulations of race and gender, and imaginaries of nation, region, and empire.
