REES 267 Revolution! Russian Culture and the Radical Tradition
Russia. This is where the world’s liberation struggles for racial and economic justice – whether in China, Cuba, or Ghana – looked for inspiration for their revolutionary programs. This course returns to essential fiction, autobiography, and film to explore the cultural bedrock of Russia’s radical tradition, which left us groundbreaking ideas about political change. Topics studied include religious sectarianism, socialism, populism, violence, and professional revolutionaries. We end with connections to global revolutionary movements. All texts in English.
