GOVT 418 Locked Out, Locked In: Citizenship and its Discontents
Liberal democracies typically promise equal benefits and rights to all citizens. But who gets to count as a citizen and who is excluded from all (or part) of its benefits? This course will explore the contested ideal of citizenship and chart a variety of ways that this ideal is undermined. Special attention is dedicated to mass incarceration and racial exclusion within the United States. [SS, GM1, V, W]
